How your stories have shaped the homes of Devonport Showground

Every Australian deserves a heartfelt connection to their home and a sense of community and hearing your stories revealed just how vital this is in Devonport. There’s a great saying, “We have two ears and one mouth to listen twice as much as we speak”. And after listening closely to the people of Devonport for the last four years, we’ve learned that there’s a big need for better housing.

In conversation with you

We’ve heard from 20 to 30-somethings who are scrimping and saving for their own place while living with Mum and Dad. People who’ve lost everything to unexpected illness: their life partner, their life savings, their ability to afford what’s out there. Young families deciding between a pricey rental near the primary school, or a decades-long mortgage on a property on the edge of town, or in a neighboring town.

We’ve heard from locals with disabilities, and the challenge of finding safe, supportive homes within reach of the services they need. Right now, they’re forced to the outskirts.

And we’ve heard from those who are getting older (and that’s everyone). You’ve shared that you want to age in place. To have the opportunity to make a home and stay there; not hide away in a retirement village or impose on your grown-up kids.

Where’s the middle ground?

Over the last 25 years, Australia’s median property value has risen by 412% (and we don’t need to tell you how wide the income/property price gap has become in Tasmania). It’s no wonder that hundreds of Devonport locals are waiting patiently for public housing, and plenty more looking to buy or rent but coming up short.

Devonport is a special place. Brimming with natural beauty and Tasmanian spirit, it’s obvious why people want to live here. But there’s a missing piece of the puzzle: the right homes.

The right homes can make this city even better

Homes that cater to singles, empty-nesters, fledgling families, extended families, downsizers, upsizers, globetrotters, gardeners, retirees, people with special needs, independent elders and those seeking respite from sky-high mortgage repayments. Homes that exist on a spectrum of size and price, bringing choices and dignity to everyone. Homes that can form the bedrock of a happy, prosperous, connected community.

What do those homes look like?

Simply listening has given us incredible insight into what the people of Devonport want and need - and it isn’t another cookie-cutter housing estate. It’s access to homes that set aside assumptions, solve real problems and respect individuality. Informed by you, the Devonport Showground development is proud to offer over 200 financially attainable, adaptable, and high-quality homes.
